Russian President to ‘Save’ Endangered Cranes?

On this rainy Wednesday in Brooklyn, ELS Blog brings you some news that may or may not brighten your day, may or may not be a joke, and may or may not be a heroic effort to guide endangered birds to their wintering grounds.  Several newspapers are reporting that Russian President Vladimir Putin will personally pilot a specially designed hang glider to help guide endangered Siberian white cranes on the first leg of their winter migration.  The cranes in question were raised in captivity, and therefore they need a “lead crane” to show them the way.  Is Putin committed to saving endangered species in Russia, or is this another publicity stunt?  Either way, if this works, it will be a boon to biodiversity in central Asia.
